Maija Ojanen (born 1981) is a visual artist working mainly with drawing and painting on paper. She has focused on large-scale watercolor paintings and ink drawings. Gouache and watercolor painting has been her main technique for several years. Lately she has started to draw with ink and bright colors have changed to a black and white color scheme.
She build her art works trough details. At the center of her forks is a human. Often woman or a child. Alongside human life nature elements have important role at her works. Nature elements often get strong symbolic meanings or describes mythological beings. Through flowers, birds and others nature marks she describes the relationships between human and nature as well as self-understanding. In her works she combines together her perceptions of the world we are living in. How to describe the merging of inner and outer space and the mixing of mind and material. She is fascinated by magical realism. Believes, myths, popular stories, science and parapsychology all melts and mix together and combines something we might call the wounded experiment to understand the nature of reality and our place on it.
